Far from being a sign of limitation, props are one of the most useful tools available in a yoga practice. Used well, they build genuine strength, protect the joints, refine alignment, and open up possibilities that might otherwise remain out of reach. This course is a thorough and practical guide to using them with skill and intention, for yourself and for the students you teach.
Yoga with Props is an 8-hour online course led by Sara Lyn Chana, a yoga teacher whose love of movement began during a nearly 20-year ballet journey and whose training spans Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Yin Yoga, completed in India. She is also the author of Essential Yoga with Props, a companion book available to course students at a special discounted price.
The course is divided into two main sections.
The first covers strength and alignment, working methodically through a broad range of standing and seated postures, from Tadasana and Warrior I through to Wheel Pose and Boat Pose, demonstrating how blocks and straps can reveal subtle inner actions, protect vulnerable areas such as the wrists, lower back, and shoulders, and support safe progression toward more advanced expressions.
The second section focuses on supported stretches, exploring how props can create space, protect the joints, and allow the body to release more deeply and sustainably in forward folds, twists, and seated poses.
Five full-length studio classes are included to bring the tutorials to life in a complete practice context: a beginner sequence with blocks, a strength and alignment class with blocks, a backbends class with a strap, a hip openers class using both blocks and a strap, and a restorative class demonstrating how props can deepen rest and recovery. Together they offer both a rich personal practice resource and a source of direct inspiration for teachers.
This course is suitable for practitioners at all levels, from those building their foundations to experienced teachers looking to integrate props more confidently and creatively into their classes.
